Pain in Finding Happiness: Trouble Brews

As with any story; there is another side, an unbelievable twist, a shocking final chapter to the story of Christy and Frank. In the last chapter Christy found at least a piece of happiness when Frank seemingly changed overnight, this installment brings that shocking twist to life.

For weeks Frank had been very close to what Christy would have called perfect. He was not drinking and was continuing to show her the attention and love she had been craving all along. Christy was so happy that she didn’t know what to think about everything that had transpired; all she knew was that she truly felt as though she had a partner again and she liked it.

Frank seemed at ease with their life as well; he didn’t seem to hold any resentment or anger any longer and was at least pretending to care. He had told Christy he was happy they had begun to work things out together and Christy was able to relax and try to allow Frank the room he needed to breathe. She didn’t know if Frank was truly happy or if it was all part of some sordid game but she hoped for the best. All she ever wanted, all she had asked of him he was doing and she was overwhelmed with love and pride for the strong man that she saw before her.

On the day that changed everything Frank kissed Christy and told her he loved her before she went to town, Christy was radiating happiness as she ran her errands. Only 2 hours later Christy came home wanting to share the events of the day with the man she loved. She couldn’t wait to get through the door and give him a hug, tell him she loved him, and spend a quiet evening with her husband.

Chronic Pain – No Exit

Chronic pain has offered me my last rebirth, my last reinvention. My career in mutation ceased the day it came filing into my life, like an occupation, insidious and absolute, or like the musical version, whimsy thinly masking tragedy. It’s theater of the absurd, No Exit.

Perhaps I needed someone or something to come in and seal up every conceivable escape route, but I would have preferred a slightly less merciless tactic. But war is not diplomatic.

I had not thought of it in terms of agency, of freedom, until a recent therapy session. Perhaps I have lived with it too long, but it struck me when she said I must feel a sense of loss of freedom. And of course it is a loss of many things, but freedom is perhaps a factor in all of the things one loses in the interminable insistence of chronic pain.

The freedoms lost are both predictably significant and tragically fundamental. Take, for example, the ability to merely sit and think, to enjoy stasis, to stare blankly, to slip into the void of time and thought, lost; It is not the freedom of planning a vacation without the fear of whether you will feel well enough to even make it through the plane ride, let alone enjoy the trip; it’s not losing the ability to sleep through the night, the joy of having sex without fear of pain or without knowing that pain will overcome you when it’s over; the fear of losing a job and your financial security and future; or the dignity of keeping your health private or the sheer loss of the beauty of shared struggles with others about health issues that arise and pass dutifully or at least subside back into the realm of “normal”, of humanly manageable, of briefly mentioned and avoidable, of doctor curable and understandable. In recent years, more people have been looking into ways of making their sex lives more interesting. Of necessity, this means reading or experimenting in areas once considered “taboo”. Today, we have largely become more open to the discussion of various subjects and practices. Within limits, of course.

One area which has gained a lot more curiosity, interest and experimentation is the practice of bondage and pain. Simply put, you cannot tell if a person practices BDSM by the clothes they wear, what movies they watch, how their home is decorated, what religion they do or do not belong to or because they have tattoos or piercings.

One of the first things to understand about BDSM is that there are many different levels to the practice. Just stating one practices BDSM is actually very little information. It’s like someone saying they like spicy food. That doesn’t say if they like Mexican, Cajun, Italian, Moroccan or just how hot or mild they may like their food. Some may say they like spicy foods but draw the line at anything hotter than Taco Bell, while others like food so spicy it will strip the paint from your car!

Aren’t You in Pain

I was out one day with two family members that know I suffer from chronic pain and illness. We had lunch and then went walking around a few sites where we were. Both of them were complaining of aches and pains after we walked around a while and climbed stairs, etc. Finally, at one point one of them asked me, “Aren’t you in pain? You haven’t’ said anything all day.”

I was surprised at the question. Of course I’m in pain. My chronic pain never goes away and with all the walking and such we were doing I was clearly limping and was even partially leaning over.

My reply was, “Yeah, I’m hurting. But it is what it is. We’re almost done walking so I’ll make it.” and that was that.

What I was thinking was, “Of course I’m in pain! But focusing on it won’t change it and probably will only make it worse. I’d rather enjoy the day.”

I didn’t complain about it because it wouldn’t change how much pain I was in. When I complain about being in pain it is for a reason. For example, to let someone know I can not go any further or need to slow, or sit down. Simply complaining I’m in pain with other people doesn’t change my pain and it only makes other people uncomfortable. The “regular people”; the ones without pain; don’t want to hear about your pain. I have found that if you want to continue to be around regular people its is best not to talk about your pain openly very often. Only speak of it when you must. The rest of the time its best to be quiet about it.

It also helps my own outlook not to be constantly focused on the pain. If I am not thinking about and talking about my pain at all times I can focus on other things and enjoy other aspects of life. The Painful Truth: What Causes Learning Disabilities?

The exact cause for learning disabilities (LD’s) has not yet been proven, although three factors are considered to have significant effects:

Genetic Influences – there is a possibility that learning disorders are passed down from one generation to the next, as children with learning disabilities can be traced to older relatives with the same or similar symptoms.

Education, Learning Styles, Memory and Learning Difficulties Concept Vector Illustration.

Brain Development – before and after the birth of a child, there are many factors that affect brain development – positively or negatively. Low birth weight, premature birth, lack of oxygen and head injuries may hamper development significantly.

Environmental Impacts – poor nutrition and an unhealthy air or water environment may cause learning disabilities in children, whether in youth or adult life.

A child who has learning disabilities is not necessarily less competent than another who has none- intelligence is not dampened by learning disabilities. Some children with LD’s have proven to be more intelligent than their counterparts. Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, and Alexander Graham bell had learning disabilities.

The most common struggles for children with LD’s are related to reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia) and mathematical (dyscalculia) ability. For young children with reading difficulties, it is helpful to teach them to associate pictures with words and sounds. Action pictures can be discussed and studied with the child, to encourage him or her to put observations to intelligible words.

Some children with LD’s are placed in Special Education, where their learning needs are met more accurately, and they have higher chances of succeeding with their studies.
